China Steps Up Trade Outreach Through Broad African Diplomatic Tour
Beijing has launched a new diplomatic drive across Africa as part of a strategy aimed at expanding its economic influence and securing global supply chains, with a high-level tour focused on enhancing trade and safeguarding key shipping routes.
The tour includes major countries in East and Southern Africa, such as Ethiopia, one of the continent’s fastest-growing economies, Somalia, which provides access to vital international maritime corridors, and Tanzania, a logistical hub linking mineral-rich central Africa to the Indian Ocean.
Through this outreach, China seeks to expand partnerships under the Belt and Road Initiative, prioritizing nations viewed as central to enhancing trade, export market expansion, and securing access to natural resources.
The move comes amid growing competition with the European Union over infrastructure financing in Africa, as many countries increasingly favor direct investment over heavy borrowing.
Somalia stands out as a key stop on the tour, reflecting Beijing’s efforts to strengthen its presence around the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, critical maritime corridors for Chinese trade flows to Europe, reinforcing China’s broader push for enhancing trade across continents.
